GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, Plumber/Gasfitter A performs skilled journeyperson level work. Work involves preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, modifications, and installing/dismantling of systems and projects, as well as troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing municipal equipment rated up to and exceeding 400,000 BTU. The incumbent will be responsible for inspecting the work of contractors, demonstrating sound judgement, and working toward reducing errors to prevent unsafe and deteriorated equipment, health and safety risks to the public, and liabilities to the municipality.
This position is required to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgement, although the work is subject to inspection
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Replace washers and seals in taps and shower valves, service strainers, steam traps, siphon preventers, and pressure reducing valves.
- Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe for replacement or new installations, fits, and caulks joints.
- Unplug clogged drainage and sanitary systems; repack pumps; solder leaking water pipes.
- Maintain and certify Back Flow Preventers.
- Maintain and repair gas fired appliances, up to and exceeding 400,000 BTU, including make-up air units, unit heaters, instant hot water tanks, boilers, etc.
- Install vents and flues and connect gas-consuming appliances such as ranges, dryers, furnaces, boilers, space heaters, radiant and forced air heaters.
- Monitor the systems status of the boiler heating and associated systems within various buildings on an ongoing basis and adjust direct digital control systems in accordance with conditions.
- Respond to, troubleshoot, and find solutions for complex and unique issues with various types of equipment relating to the trade.
- Complete preventative maintenance on various equipment daily, monthly, and annually as required including ventilation systems, heat exchangers, glycol systems and pressure relief/sustaining valves.
- Demonstrate the use of control systems and conduct seminars and tours on building automation systems as required.
- Provide direct digital control automation expertise to planning of other projects.
- Drive a light truck and maintain stock of equipment and parts.
- Operate various equipment related to the trade.
- Identify and purchase parts and supplies using department policies for guidance.
- Complete and maintain accurate records, reports, and work orders.
- Maintain all facility logbooks as required.
- Provide written notes on work orders or other forms of communication.
- Provide guidance, instruction, and direction to assigned helpers or apprentices as required.
- Respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
- Participate in development of trade related preventative maintenance tasks.
- Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports, as necessary.
- Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness initiatives.
- Complete training and participate in municipal training program as required by operations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Extensive knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing and gasfitting trade.
- • Extensive knowledge about, and experience working within, the Gasfitter Trade Regulation, Plumber Trade Regulation, the Safety Codes Act, and all other applicable rules and codes governing installations.
- Knowledge about, and experience working within, the rules and codes governing installations, the Gas Protection Act, and Plumbing National Code.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, and ability to implement safe work practices, including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Familiarity with the work of related trades and contractors.
- Coordination and manual dexterity to work with a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
- High degree of attention to detail, accuracy, and form perception to discern pertinent details when threading and assembling pipes, valves, fittings, and fixtures.
- High attention to detail required to complete scrutiny of work, especially when checking for locations and causes of leaks or condition of valve seals and pipe threads.
- Ability to perform frequent lifting of equipment, pipe, and fixtures and to cut, bend, and join piping. • Must be able to work with piping larger than 2” including installing flanges, spools, fittings, valves, etc.
- Ability to interpret, understand, and carry out verbal/written instructions and technical plans/specifications.
- Ability to set priorities and respond to emergency situations.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Certified Journeyperson in the trade of Plumbing is required.
- Certified Journeyperson in the trade of Gasfitter Class A is required.
- Three (3) years of journeyperson experience as a Plumber/Gasfitter is required. Class A journeyperson experience is preferred.
- Experience in municipal operations is an asset
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance for those working within the RCMP detachment, is required.
- A valid Class five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
- Ability to travel to various locations within the region
- Must be willing to work outside and drive in all weather conditions.
- Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
- Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
