GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Support Worker, Victim Services assists victims of crime, trauma and tragedy in accordance to applicable legislation, policy and procedures. The incumbent provides victims with empathic support, information and referrals based on the victim’s needs.  The work also includes mitigating the crisis and facilitating a victim’s return to stability and an improved quality of life.  Primary responsibilities of this position include:

 

Guidance & Support: Assists the Supervisor and the RCMP with overall program delivery through direct involvement with victims, internal and external contacts, daily operations, and overall administration. Provides guidance and support to victims to ensure all legislated obligations are met. Liaises with the victim, RCMP, and the Crown during the criminal justice process.

 

Program Development: Develops, researches, compiles, tracks, and assembles information for branch budgets, systems, procedures, registrations, clients, claims, and reports. Maintains department intranet and information systems to ensure they are accurate and up-to-date. Travels regularly throughout the Municipality to rural communities and attends court when required. Develops and delivers programs to educate the community. Ensures that internal and external inquiries are appropriately handled or redirected.

 

Service Delivery: Responds to crisis call outs on a rotational basis, advises victims about safety and security, acts as an advocate, and provides support for victims in crisis at the initial incident and on an ongoing basis. Makes referrals for appropriate services and provides customer support and services for a variety of clients in the community. Assists in the preparation and support for the victim in court proceedings. Collaboratively works with groups like the RCMP, Domestic Violence Assistance Team (DVAT), Children’s Services, and the Crown. Collaborates and provides input/feedback on various community boards and committees. Maintains client files. Assists in special projects as required. Assists with volunteer recruitment for advocate positions. May participate in the administration of the Emergency Social Services community response.

 

 

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Knowledge of victim advocacy, crisis counselling, volunteer coordination and community outreach programs.
  • Knowledge of court and police procedures as they relate to the work performed.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to maintain high level of confidentiality of materials and information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with various diverse internal and external clients, demonstrating compassion, empathy, and nonjudgmental support.  
  • Proficiency with various Microsoft programs and working knowledge with a variety of database software.
  • Organizational and planning skills to manage time, meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Must be able to perform in fast-paced, high pressure and emotional environments. while demonstrating excellent customer service.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimum supervision and direction.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to listen effectively, clarify information as needed, and convey information in a clear and concise manner.

 

 

EDUCATION:

 

  • Diploma in Social Services (Social Work, Nursing, Childhood Development, or Family Services) or a related discipline.
  • Victim Services Training is mandatory upon hire.

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Two (2) years of experience in a victim services/advocacy role, including experience working in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Experience working in a policing detachment environment is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
