GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Pool Operator performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks to maintain and operate the Aquatic Centre in Fort Chipewyan and is approximately 223 kilometers north of Fort McMurray. The incumbent also oversees the day-to-day building operations and maintenance of the facility, ensuring the safety of employees, citizens, and visitors. 

 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Operate, repair, maintain, and clean mechanical equipment for pool operation including water filtration, chemical purification systems, intake and outlet valves, chemical feeders, pumps, compressors, vacuum equipment, and chlorine metering devices.
  • Regulate water temperature and levels.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance program for pool operations.
  • Perform pump room duties including backwash, handling, and installation of chemicals as necessary.
  • Inspect, adjust, and perform preventive maintenance to pool machinery and equipment including pumps, filtration equipment, and related equipment.
  • Monitor pool water chemistry through testing of water samples; adjusting chemistry as needed to maintain standards.
  • Handle chemicals such as chlorine, celite, carbon dioxide, and muriatic acid.
  • Conduct inspections on all site mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and related equipment including but not limited to water treatment, boilers, heat pumps, roof top units, air conditioners, etc., on daily/weekly basis and complete appropriate record logs in order to ensure equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Complete daily and monthly reports; maintain related records and statistics for maintenance.
  • Maintain all pump rooms.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 


QUALIFICATIONS

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Familiar with all aspects of building operations including but not limited to HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, etc. and ensure all equipment and systems are operated in a safe and efficient manner and are in compliance with all applicable government codes and regulations.
  • General math and numeracy skills, including the ability to calculate chemical requirements. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with the ability to clarify and convey information in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment, hand, and power tools under varying conditions. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make complex decisions. 
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in swimming pool maintenance and operations.
  • Experience and knowledge of standard swimming pool safety precautions and procedures, and tools used to maintain pumps, boilers, filters, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to use various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). 
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is an asset.
  • Ability to maintain composure and respond to difficult situations in a professional manner. 

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with a total of two (2) years of experience in public pool maintenance. Experience to include a minimum of one (1) year of experience in building operations.

OR

  • Completion of Grade Ten (10), with a total of four (4) years of related experience in public pool maintenance and building operations is required. The combination of experience must include a minimum of two (2) years in public pool maintenance and one (1) year of experience in building operations.  
  • Pool Operator Level I (as recognized by Alberta Health Services) is required. 
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications are assets.

 


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check for review and acceptance.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis. 
  • Clean driver’s abstract is considered an asset.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions. 
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
