GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Coordinator, Fort Chipewyan is responsible for enabling citizens and user groups to develop community programs, projects, and events, to deal with issues, operate facilities, and establish systems to empower them to take ownership. Areas of focus may include sport, parks, recreation, youth, organizational development, and administration of special events and programs. 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Research and design special events, programs, and projects.
  • Facilitate workshops, provide technical advice and guidance, and assist not-for-profit agencies in achieving their plans and ongoing development.
  • Develop and/or evaluate plans/reports and strategies to ensure community needs are met to optimize service levels and encourage community pride and ownership. 
  • Plan and develop advertisement and promotional campaigns for programs and events.
  • Research and access grants, canvas donations, gifts-in-kind, and corporate sponsorship for cost containment.
  • Provide administrative functions including preparation of council reports, business planning, and budget preparation.
  • Assist in the creation of agreements, contracts, and leases as needed.
  • Plan and develop project plans and timelines in consultation with immediate supervisor, related departments and branches, community group, and alliances.
  • Weekly reporting to Supervisor. 
  • Recruit, train, and lead volunteers. 
  • Develop methods to generate revenue from special events and programs. 
  • Perform other related duties as required.
     


QUALIFICATIONS


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • High degree of interpersonal, communication, and group process skills.
  • Sound project and time management skills to manage multiple projects, events, and programs effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Promote creativity by proposing innovative ideas and solutions to problems. 
  • Maintain professionalism and a positive outlook during periods of stress and/or heavy workload. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, collaborative, and productive work relationships. 
  • Is a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is an asset. 
  • Ability to provide leadership by planning, prioritizing, and directing projects, events, and programs. 

 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

 

  • Degree in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation Management, Sport Management, or related discipline is required;

OR

  • Diploma in Recreation Administration, Recreation and Leisure studies, Recreation and Sport Management, Outdoor Recreation, Event Management, or related discipline with two (2) years related experience is required.
  • Event, volunteer management, and budget control experience are preferred assets. 

 


OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis. 
  • Ability to work outside of regular hours on evenings, weekends, or statutory holidays if required. 
  • Must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions.
