GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under limited supervision, the Youth Worker, Fort Chipewyan is responsible for the delivery of programs, activities, and events in the Fort Chipewyan area. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision, mentoring, and care of youth ages 6 – 17 while they are participating in activities and programs. 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Ensure a wide range of recreational, sport, and cultural programs are provided.
  • Evaluate programs, activities, and events on an ongoing basis and make changes when required, based on community/organizational needs.
  • Responsible for decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution for related Youth Programs. 
  • Mentor, support, and encourage youth attending programs, activities, or events at the Archie Simpson Arena and other locations within the community. 
  • Communicate with community members and report needs and interests.
  • Plan and implement events, programs, and projects to encourage an active lifestyle and enhance the quality of life for all community members.
  • Ensure recreation, culture and Municipal information is available.
  • Act as a customer service representative by responding to enquiries.
  • Prepare program reports as required.
  • Assist with program budget specifics for program needs. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and supplies in building during office hours (i.e. public washrooms). 
  • Open/close facility when required.
  • Develop program calendars and adjust based on needs and interests of the community and organizational mandate. 
  • Other duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Interpersonal and group process skills, with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative, collaborative, and productive relationships. 
  • Ability to clarify and convey information in a clear and concise manner, actively seeks to understand information communicated by listening and asking for clarification when needed. 
  • Conflict resolution skills. 
  • Knowledge of external resources and organizations in the region. 
  • Maintain professionalism and a positive outlook during periods of stress and/or heavy workload
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to effectively schedule work to meet service demands. 
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is an asset. 
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change. 
  • Recognizes opportunities to meet organizational objectives through partnerships with stakeholders. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with six (6) months of direct work experience; 

 

OR

 

  • Diploma in Recreation is required.
  • Valid standard First Aid Certificate is required. 

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must have reasonable availability to be called in to work, sometimes on short notice. 
  • Ability to work a rotating shift that may include holidays, evenings, and weekends.
