GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Automotive Service Technician performs skilled journeyperson work on a variety of municipal vehicles/equipment, including but not limited to, sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, cab/chassis with equipped bodies, trailers, outdoor power equipment, utility equipment, and associated attachments. Work involves preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, modifications, installation/dismantling of systems, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing municipal equipment/vehicles. The incumbent will be responsible for inspecting the work of contractors, demonstrating sound judgement, and working toward reducing errors to prevent unsafe and deteriorated equipment, health and safety risks to the public, and liabilities to the municipality. The incumbent will exercise a considerable degree of independent judgement, although the work is subject to inspection.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Organize and perform a variety of work involving corrective and preventative maintenance, repairs, alteration, and installation of systems and equipment.
  • Complete testing of repaired municipal equipment to ensure proper performance and that the work completed meets required regulations. 
  • Perform commercial vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with Alberta’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation is maintained.
  • Requisition materials and supplies, as required.
  • Provide input into technical data, specifications, and cost estimates. 
  • Comply with various quality, safety, and trade codes related to regulations and standards.
  • Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness and initiatives.
  • Utilize operational and maintenance manuals, parts manuals, and electrical/hydraulic schematics to complete repairs.
  • Conduct pre-delivery inspections of new equipment.
  • Assist in developing short-term goals and objectives, project estimates and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Oversee and assess the work of apprentices engaged in the trade and/or assistants performing labouring tasks.
  • Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports as necessary.
  • Maintain all facility logbooks as required. 
  • Complete training and participate in the RMWB training program as required by operations. 
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both external and internal clients, as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Considerable knowledge of the current and relevant standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the automotive service technician trade.
  • Skilled in the use of repair tools and equipment for servicing and repairing municipal vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to locate, diagnose and repair malfunctions in variety of municipal vehicles/equipment. 
  • Ability to skillfully operate computerized diagnostic tools for engines, transmissions, anti-lock brakes, body control modules, etc. and to follow proper testing procedures and/or troubleshooting to repair these systems efficiently.
  • Ability to perform accurate measurements and to complete complex calculations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. 
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, read and interpret electrical/hydraulic schematics and technical specifications.  
  • Must be able to determine priority in the case of an emergency.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), Fleet Maintenance Management Work Order Systems, and proficiency in diagnostic software such as Snap-On Pro Diagnostic tools, Ford IDS, Mitchell1 ProDemand, etc. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, collaborative and productive work relationships.
  • Ability to deal courteously and respectfully with a diverse range of people, using judgement, tact, and sound decision-making skills, sometimes in conflict situations.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with technological changes in the trade.
  • Ability to provide close attention when working with small parts of complex equipment and to use good eyesight and hearing for diagnosing problems and inspecting work.
  • Ability to exert moderate/high physical effort for lifting heavy parts, tires, brake drums, etc. 
  • Ability to work in fatiguing or awkward positions, including considerable bending, standing and laying during the workday.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Certified journeyperson in the trade of Automotive Service Technician is required. 
  • Valid Alberta Commercial Vehicle Inspection (CVIP) license and the continued re-certification as required to maintain the license is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience as a journeyperson of Automotive Service Technician is required, that includes proven experience with electrical systems and modules, electronic controls, braking systems, engines, and transmissions, etc., and vehicle diagnostic computer programs.
  • Experience in municipal operations is an asset. 

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis. 
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions. 
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends.
