GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, the Carpenter performs skilled journeyperson carpentry work. This work involves preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, modifications, installation/dismantling of systems and projects; and troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing of municipal assets. Demonstrating sound judgment, the incumbent will be responsible for inspecting the work of contractors and working toward reducing errors to prevent unsafe and deteriorated equipment, health and safety risks to facility/building occupants and public, and liabilities to the Municipality. Assignments are generally in the form of oral instructions but may be accompanied by written instructions, sketches, blueprints. The journeyperson may be assigned helpers or apprentices as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cuts, shapes and finishes materials with hand and power tools such as saw, jointer, planer, router, sander and drill press.
- Builds and erects forms and pouring chutes for concrete.
- Repairs roofing surfaces with asphalt, tar, aluminum and wood; installs flashing and vents; applies caulking and water-proofing compounds.
- Cuts, fits plastic in door and window frames and other structures.
- Builds and repairs cupboards, cabinets, picnic tables and other furnishings.
- Erects or alters partitions, whiteboards, bulletin boards, and other similar objects.
- Other minor maintenance repair to facility assets.
- Responds to, troubleshoots, and find solutions for issues with various types of equipment relating to the trade.
- Performs facility inspections to identify maintenance and safety concerns, providing recommendations to supervision for action.
- Maintains all facility log books as per departmental requirements.
- May be required to attain pertinent permits prior to work.
- Performs other related duties as required.
The job exercises a considerable degree of independent judgment although the work is subject to inspection. Poor judgement or errors may result in a negative impact on municipal operations, corporate image, and strategic direction.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of all building construction materials, the methods and techniques used to build, modify, maintain and repair structures to withstand varying loads.
- Prior experience working with door hardware is required, including light duty locksmithing.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, ability to work safety with a variety of power tools,and ability to implement safe work practices, including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Familiarity with the work of related trades and contractors.
- The ability to read blueprints, do layout work, calculate quantities of materials and to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Visual acuity, both near and far, and depth perception.
- Sufficient strength to perform medium work requiring the frequent lifting of tools, materials and assemblies weighing up to fifty pounds.
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Coordination and manual dexterity to work with a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
- High degree of attention to detail, accuracy, and form perception to discern pertinent details
- Must be able to prioritize work in case of emergencies.
- Ability to set priorities and respond to emergency situations.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Proficient math and numeracy skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Certified Alberta Journeyman in the trade of Carpenter.
- Three (3) years of journeyperson experience in the carpentry trade.
- Experience in municipal operations or dual tickets are assets.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
- A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
- Equipment field testing and/or competency testing will be required as part of the interview evaluation.
- Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
