GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

This is a Co-op Student position working eighty (80) hours bi-weekly, from May 2026 to August 2026 within the Roads Branch of the Public Works Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit.

 

Under close supervision, the Engineering Technician Co-op Student will assist the Roads Branch in providing engineering analysis, survey, design, construction supervision, and project management of the Municipality’s Roads related engineering works.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assist with planning and pre-design analysis, survey, and studies.
  • Assist with formal inspections of roads and sidewalks.
  • Assist with preparation of technical specifications, tender, and construction contract documents suitable for purposes of public tendering and/or award of construction, operational projects, and local improvements.
  • Review submitted tender documents to ensure bids are technically complete and mathematically correct.
  • Conduct deficiency inspections, review and analyze test results, enforce rectification of deficiencies. Aid staff in assessing project readiness for construction completion certificates and final acceptance certificates.
  • Assist in the overview of construction projects during the warranty/ maintenance period to ensure that design and construction deficiencies are corrected as required.
  • Respond to public complaints, including warranty work.
  • Assist in preparation, update, and review for approval as-built drawings and records for all municipal infrastructures.
  • Assist in preparation of project briefs and reports for the Project/Program Manager or Supervisor.
  • Assist with traffic and transportation analysis, research, proposal preparation, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Assist with pre and post construction inspections.
  • Data input and analysis.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with strong technical report writing skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience/familiarity or training in computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and achieve self-set goals and targets with independent initiative.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal courteously and effectively with a diverse range of people, using judgement, tact, and sound decision-making skills.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Current enrollment in a recognized post-secondary Civil, Transportation, or Construction Engineering diploma program is required.
  • Must be registered in a recognized Co-operative Education (Co-op) program in Civil, Transportation, or Construction Engineering to be eligible for employment.

 

 

Candidates who are successful during the interview process will be required to provide the following documents:

 

  • Proof of full-time enrollment in an approved Co-op program as outlined above.
  • Contact information for two (2) Supervisory references.
  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check. 
  • A copy of a valid Class Five (5) *Driver’s Licence (non-GDL) and a Driver’s Abstract. *Note: GDL will not be accepted. Proof of licence and a Driver’s Abstract (issued within 30 days) will be required from candidates.

 

These documents are not required at the time of application, however preparing and collecting these documents in advance will expedite the recruitment process for successful candidates.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
