GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is looking to fill multiple Firefighter Paramedic (PCP or ACP) positions in 2025. These are exciting and challenging career opportunities. The Regional Emergency Services (RES) Department is a fully integrated Fire/EMS service that provides advanced life support including helicopter medical and rescue services within our region. These positions are within the IAFF Local 2494 Union.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Safely respond to emergency and non-emergency scenes within established RES guidelines.
• Take direction from operations officers in matters pertaining to fire and medical response.
• Take direction from officers where required in matters pertaining to training and prevention.
• Perform routine duties related to shift operations in areas such as apparatus/equipment maintenance, reports, station maintenance, etc.
• Work collaboratively within a team environment.
• Assist the department in public education, the promotion of fire safety, fire prevention, and public relations campaigns.
• Attend training courses as necessary to facilitate progression to First Class Firefighter.
• Perform basic administrative functions.
• Perform such tasks as necessary to support and maintain continuity of the Regional Emergency Services Department.
• Understand and support the Corporate Mission, Vision and Values Statements.
• Perform other duties as required.
SKILLS:
• Capable of maintaining performance and decision-making in high-stress, unpredictable emergency situations over extended periods.
• Able to work effectively for prolonged durations in extreme temperature conditions, including both hot and cold environments.
• Comfortable operating in confined or restrictive spaces as required by the role.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
• Ability to promptly and accurately comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.
• Demonstrates proficiency in computer use, including electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems, incident documentation, and other software applications.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• NFPA 1001 Level I and II is required for Firefighter PCP/ACP positions.
• Current Alberta College of Paramedics Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Certification is required.
• Valid CPR - Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Class Four (4) Alberta Driver's Licence, or
• Valid Class Three (3) Alberta Driver's Licence (with "Q" Endorsement) or equivalent out of province is an asset.
• Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Qualified candidates invited to participate in the recruitment process must successfully complete each of the following steps to advance in the recruitment process:
• Aptitude Test (completed in Fort McMurray or remotely through invigilation services)
• Firefighter Physical Fitness Testing
• Interview
• Medical Assessment
Due to the nature of the physical fitness testing, applicants are strongly encouraged to begin preparing for the fitness test well in advance. More information, including videos, can be found here and on the University of Alberta's website.
To complete this requirement, applicants must register directly on the University of Alberta's Firefighter Fitness Testing website. The RMWB will accept U of A results, provided that the testing was successfully completed within the last six (6) months. Applicants who have not yet completed the U of A fitness test are still welcome to apply, as additional testing dates may become available.
