GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Fleet Technician provides direct customer support to vehicle operators. This includes delivering vehicles to and from service repair shops, liaising with administrative staff, and performing minor repairs on vehicles and radios.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Complete road tests to determine the general nature of the reported vehicle’s problems and the type of repair or maintenance required.
  • Perform a variety of minor repairs and maintenance on required vehicles/equipment, which includes cleaning interior and exterior of vehicles.
  • Deliver and pick up municipal vehicles according to maintenance schedules, or as required by breakdowns or collisions.
  • Check contracted service and repair work for completeness and quality control and escalate unresolved matters to foreperson or supervisor.
  • Liaise with administrative staff to ensure all invoices, appointments, and service paperwork is in order.
  • Maintain an inventory of tires and ensure that all vehicles are equipped with standard supplies and equipment.
  • Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports, as necessary.
  • Maintain all facility logbooks as required.
  • Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness and initiatives.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both external and internal clients, as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Poor judgement or errors may result in inconvenience to internal clients, negative impacts on vehicle and equipment costs, and inefficiencies in equipment performance.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Working knowledge of the operating principles of automotive equipment and the rules of safe operation.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and skilled in the use of tools and equipment for servicing and repairing a variety of fleet vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in applicable occupational health and safety regulations and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to deal courteously and respectfully with a diverse range of people, using judgement, tact, and sound decision-making skills, sometimes in conflict situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and prepare/maintain files and records.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent is required.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in minor maintenance and repair work of automotive vehicles is required.
  • Post-secondary courses in automotive repair or system experience are considered an asset.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
  • Competency testing may be required as part of the interview process.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
