GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Lab Technician performs water and wastewater sample collection and analysis to ensure compliance to municipal, provincial, and federal regulations. Poor judgement or errors may result in a negative impact on regulatory compliance, municipal operations, municipal image, and the health of residents and the environment.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Perform sample collection and analysis, and document the results of raw water, drinking water, wastewater, and related samples to meet regulatory and operational requirements.
  • Identify issues with testing results and communicate the required information to supervisor and operations within established timelines.
  • Conduct and document the results of calibrations, method, and equipment validations.
  • Assume the duties of the Quality Control Technician (QCT).
  • Maintain inventory of all laboratory supplies, including ordering materials and supplies through the procurement procedures.
  • Update and/or create procedures, quality manual, templates, corrective actions, forms, and other lab documents as required.
  • Prepare for, participate in, and complete action items for audits and assessments.
  • Submit monthly summary of laboratory results to supervisor according to established deadlines.
  • Adhere to procedures and policies pertaining to quality control, assurance and safety to ensure compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Proficiency in the use of various testing equipment, instruments, and tools.
  • Ability to maintain and high degree of accuracy while testing, analyzing, record keeping, and in the preparing of data and reports.
  • Ability to follow established regulations and procedures to maintain environmental compliance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with various computer applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, OpenText, LIMS) and ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the applicable occupational health and safety regulations and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • General math and numeracy skills, including the ability to perform various types of calculations.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Diploma in Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or Laboratory Technology combined with three (3) years’ experience in potable water or wastewater analysis.

OR

  • Degree in Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or Laboratory Technology combined with one (1) year experience in potable water or wastewater analysis.
  • Experience must include working within the Canadian Association of Laboratory Accreditation (CALA), ISO 17025 or other relevant ISO Standards.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
