GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, perform manual labourer duties; clean and maintain all assigned areas/facilities, operate a variety of small equipment and perform general labour tasks in assigned department. Remain flexible to respond to the immediate needs of your area to increase overall effectiveness of operations. 

 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Maintain assigned areas using various small hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Operate assigned equipment and light motorized vehicles such as small engine equipment, lawn tractors, implements, pick-up trucks, litter control equipment, and skid steers.
  • Load, unload and deliver material and supplies. 
  • Perform clean up and minor maintenance duties in assigned facilities and grounds, in all weather conditions.
  • Provide assistance to other departments when required.
  • Assist with inspections if required by assigned area.
  • Clean out manholes and sewer mains.
  • Collect refuse in parks, playgrounds, and streets.
  • Erect street signs.
  • Dig holes and trenches.
  • Direct traffic during street construction projects.
  • Manually sweep sidewalks.
  • Assist in the painting of street lines and crosswalks.
  • Assist in the maintenance of wooden sidewalks, steps, fences, and guardrails.
  • Assist in the maintenance of underground vaults, manholes and catch basins.
  • Assist tradesmen in general building maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to work shifts and weekends.
  • Will perform various duties related to Winter Works Operations.
  • If assigned at the Water or Wastewater Facilities the following will also apply:    
    • Perform general labourer tasks related to and not limited to the repair and maintenance of all municipal treatment and collection facilities.
    • Provide assistance to the treatment operation, septage inspections, bio-solids operation and maintenance trades.
  • Perform basic fleet maintenance. 
  • Operate recycling equipment such as crushers, conveyors, loaders, hydraulic forklifts, etc.
  • Coordinate activities related to hazardous waste collection and storage.
  • May be required to respond to public inquiries in an effective manner.
  • Occasionally will be required in coordinating Landfill operations under the direction of Landfill Attendant.
  • Maintain daily records.
  • Perform all other related duties as required.

 


QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Must communicate effectively and understand instruction and safety procedures. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate dependability and reliability.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.


 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

 

  • Completion of High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year related labourer experience is required.

 


OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent may be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis. 
  • A valid Alberta Class three (3) driver’s license is an asset.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions. 
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
