GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, the Septage Inspector monitors the septic system disposal operations to ensure compliance with municipal bylaws, provincial and federal legislation. The incumbent will respond to enquiries, maintain files and records, and submit reports.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Inspect septic loads being delivered to the municipal facility and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and operating procedures.
  • Conduct and assist with waste screen audits to obtain facility usage data, or to confirm contents of various waste loads.
  • Perform sampling of incoming material.
  • Contact and provide information to bylaw as required to assist enforcement of bylaws and provincial legislation.
  • Assist with investigations relating to noncompliance.
  • Respond to complaints and enquiries.
  • Maintain files, records, and submit required reports.
  • Quarantine unacceptable materials and store until environmental enforcement officer arrives.
  • Perform traffic control duties.
  • Check and maintain assigned vehicle as per schedule.
  • Participate in and complete required safety documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of, or ability to acquire knowledge of relevant bylaws and legislation relating to septage waste.
  • Ability to apply basic investigative techniques, organizational skills and maintain basic records, statements and reports.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the required safety regulations and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with co-workers and external contacts.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, demonstrating responsibility and reliability.
  • Proficiency in the use of various testing equipment.
  • Follow and understand established policies and procedures, and ability to educate external contacts to ensure compliance.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
